Welcome to the Werribee Weather Station in Victoria, Australia. This private weather station (a.k.a personal weather station) is located in Werribee, approximately 32 km south-west of Melbourne, the capital city of Victoria, and halfway between Melbourne and Geelong on the Princes Highway.
The name Werribee is an aboriginal name meaning backbone or spine. It is thought that this name was given as the shape of the Werribee River valley in the landscape looks like a backbone. The Werribee River seems to have provided a boundary between the territories of the Woiwurong aborigines to the north east and the Wothowurong to the south west, although other tribal groups visited the area. About the Werribee Weather Station
Werribee Weather Station resumed operating in late January 2010 after a lapse of about 15 years. Prior to this break, daily observations were taken over about 10 years, however the paper records from this observing period have been lost. February 2010 is the first complete month of electronically recorded observations since this private weather station resumed operating.
The Werribee Weather Station is equipped with dual instrumentation:
- Traditional manual meteorological instruments, consisting of:
- Stevenson screen housing a dry-bulb thermometer, wet-bulb thermometer, maximum thermometer and a minimum thermometer, as supplied to a manual land-based weather station by the Australian Bureau of Meteorology (ABOM),
- Marine aneroid barometer, and
- Rain gauge.
- La Crosse WS2355 Automatic Weather Station (AWS), consisting of:
- Thermo-hygro sensor mounted in a small "marine" Stevenson screen,
- Tipping-bucket rain gauge,
- Combined cup anemometer and wind vane, and
- Heavy Weather (version 2.0 beta) and WUHU (version 1.0.216.207) software.
The manual instruments are the primary instruments and are sited to comply with the ABOM's guidelines wherever practicable in an urban environment.
The La Crosse WS2355 thermo-hygro sensor is 3.1m above the ground. Comparisons against the primary instruments have resulted in the following software offsets being applied: -0.3° C to temperature and +1% to humidity. The tipping-bucket rain gauge is at an elevation of 2.9m and compares very favourably with the primary instrument.
Weather Observations
The manual instruments are read twice daily. The primary observation is taken in the morning that includes reading the rain gauge and minimum thermometer, confirming the previous night's reading of the maximum thermometer then resetting the maximum and minimum thermometers. A second observation is taken in the evening that includes reading the maximum thermometer.
Werribee Weather Station also records the occurrence of daily weather phenomena, i.e. thunderstorm, hail, lightning, fog and frost.
The daily weather data from the Werribee Weather Station can be viewed in the right side panel and from links in the top menu, and are usually manually updated daily.
A range of monthly climate statistics from the Werribee Weather Station can be viewed from links in the left side panel. These climate statistics will usually be manually updated at the end of each month.
Routine performance monitoring of the primary daily variables (rainfall, maximum temperature and minimum temperature) is performed by comparing the data from this personal weather station against the ABOM's AWS at nearby Laverton and Avalon.
The La Crosse WS2355 AWS is continually sampling and the data are logged on computer. The weather observations are routinely uploaded to the "Live Weather" applet in the right side panel, and are also submitted to Australian Weather Network, AWEKAS, Weather Underground, CWOP, PWS Weather and WeatherBug.
